Belmont
No, the stack at the Combination Mill does not curve like this- only in my attempt to stitch photos together to give you an idea of its impressive size.
An overview of the town of Belmont , looking generally SW
Since I'm forcing panoramic shots down your throat, here is one of the inside of the Highbridge Mill, SE of Belmont.
Why do I risk my life by standing in the middle of a state highway on a busy Saturday afternoon? Because of you, the web site customer, and your insatiable desire for photographs of historic sites!
OK, I swear this is the last of the distorted panoramic photos. This is standing on the main drag, looking generally towards the NW. The courthouse is hidden behind the autumn foliage.
OK, now we start on the panoramas that Luis took! This is an almost 360° photo of the inside of the Highbridge Mill
Here's another of Luis's panoramas, showing the town site looking down from the new church, looking NW.
On the way to Belmont on US 50 East.
Belmont's only operating saloon. The other saloon- Dirty Dick's, I think it was called- is for sale, but wasn't open when we were there.
It would make us happy if you looked at this picture, since Luis took the time to artistically compose and frame it. This is what I love about Yesterday and despise about Today. Here we have a smokestack built in the middle of who knows where that no one is going to see except the people who built it, the people who work at the mill, and an occasional passerby, yet they took the time to decorate the top, like it was Important. I think that's way cool. If our descriptions make you want to relocate to Belmont, these cabins may be available! Check with your Realtor®!
Lasts a long time, but you can't hear yourself think when it rains. Looking at the Highbridge Mill through the Highbridge Mill! I'm dizzy! Here lies the son of the Honorable Benjamin Curler and Rhoda A. Curler; in 1866 he moved to Belmont from La Plata to become District Judge for Churchill & Nye Counties; in 1873 his son died; three years later he was elected District Attorney of Nye County; eight years later he retired from the bench to practice law.
The remains of the Monitor-Belmont Mill
A view of the Highbridge Mill, overlooking the Monitor Valley. The jail cells sit outside the court house and bake in the sun.
